May is Minnesota Museums Month!

May is a 31-day celebration of the hundreds of historic sites, art museums, zoos, and science centers located across the state. Here are some related news and resources to help you explore musuems, either onsite or online.

The ACE museum partners:

Throughout May, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts is celebrating Minnesota through art. On Instagram and Twitter, the museum is featuring one artwork per day related to a Minnesota theme. Follow along with #mnmuseums. You are invited to participate too! Check out the list of daily themes here.
On Saturday, May 18th, the Walker Art Center celebrates International Museum Day by offering free gallery admission.

Art Lab: Re-Imagining the Museum—Use this lesson plan for a hands-on activity that gets students thinking creatively about the architecture, function, and meaning of museums. This resource was created by the Walker Art Center's Art Lab Coordinator for use in the classroom with students grades 6-12.
Room of Wonders—This interactive game for students grades 3-8 reconstructs a curiosity cabinet begun as a collection of exotic objects gathered during the 18th century by President de Robien (1698-1756), a scholar from Rennes. Art Collector Sets about the Sculptue Garden

ACE celebrates the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden's 25th anniversary in 2013 with a series of Art Collector Sets. Discover the artists, sculptures, and experiences that make the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden a magnificent city landmark.

The first "Anniversary Set" to be published is "Photobombing the Spoon and Cherry". Thanks to Walker guard and artist Todd Balthazor for applying his sense of humor to this entertaining Set.

New Teacher Resource by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts

Congratulations to Elizabeth Dunn for being an outstanding Art Collector! ArtsConnectEd is pleased to award an iPad to Dunn for her entry to the fourth iPad Challenge, “It’s about Choice”. Dunn's creation is titled "WORK in North America" and demonstrates how an Art Collector Set can be used to engage students in the process of making choices.

In presentation mode, Dunn's Set displays images of laborers and workers from different times and places across the North American continent. The images are launching points for intermediate students' conversation, analysis, and writing. To unpack and implement this excellent resource in your classroom, be sure to download Dunn's well-designed, thorough attachments. There are four of them—a lesson plan (including detailed references to the Minnesota Academic Standards), and three activity sheets for students to use in the classroom. Lastly, Dunn demonstrates an ability to teach in a cross-disciplinary style, using works of art to teach Social Studies, all the while weaving in opportunties to address the formal elements and communicative power of art.

Congratulations to Jacob Gelfand for being an outstanding Art Collector! ArtsConnectEd is pleased to award an iPad to Gelfand for his entry to the fourth iPad Challenge, “It’s about Choice”. Gelfand's creation is titled "Modern Art and Politics" and demonstrates how an Art Collector Set can use art to engage students in critical thought about the choices we all make as producers and consumers of culture.

Gelfand, who is an Upper School English and Creative Writing Teacher at The International School of Minnesota, crafted his Set to overlap with literature in his with AP English curriculum. The works of art he selected grapple with tough issues such as the body and its representation, gender and sexuality, and cultural anxieties and fears. Gelfand integrated evocative, open-ended discussion questions into his Set. Furthermore, Gelfand's Set includes two attachments, one for the educator that outlines curricular objectives, and a second for the student that provides supplemental information, slide by slide, on each artwork, bringing in voices of critics, curators, artists, and philosophers.

Congratulations to Alicia Dolentz for being an outstanding Art Collector! ArtsConnectEd is pleased to award an iPad to Dolentz for her entry to the fourth iPad Challenge, “It’s about Choice”. Dolentz’s creation is titled “Art as Response” and demonstrates how an Art Collector Set can be used to engage students in the process of making choices.

Dolentz, who is a K-12 visual art teacher, focused her Set on the life and art of Shirin Neshat. The Set is designed as a way for high school students to dive deeper into understanding an artist's motivation to create. Dolentz integrated discussion questions and a call to action into the Set, features which serve to guide students through themes of cultural identity and political change in meaningful ways.

	March is Women's History Month To support your observance of Women's History Month in the classroom, here's a short list of resources that highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. The Library of Congress has centralized a wealth of resources and lesson plans for teaching women's history in the classroom. Find them here: http://womenshistorymonth.gov/teachers.html Meanwhile, on ArtsConnectEd, an educator published this Art Collector Set featuring depictions of women from the 17th century to the present day: "Portraits of Women Through the Ages". The images in this Set could be used to support a journaling exercize in which students speculate about the lives of the individual women portrayed in the artworks. For older audiences (grades 11, 12, and college students), "Women and Feminism within the Arts since 1945" is a resource that familiarizes students with a variety of contemporary women artists and feminist issues within contemporary art. Entry requirements: Each teacher may submit 2 artworks. E-mail the following information to Michael Kantor at youthartmonth@gmail.com or michael.kantor@elkriver.k12.mn.us:

include your mailing address so the YAM team can mail you posters and postcards

Work Specifications: Please follow the following guidelines

student work must be matted and ready to be pinned to display board

Delivery of Work: It's advised that you plan with other teachers in your district to coordinate shipping/delivery. Please read the following guidelines:

Start the new year with a new iPad! Take advantage of your holiday break to put the finishing touches on your outstanding Art Collector Set! The deadline for iPad Challenge #4 has now been extended four weeks. Originally set for early December, the new deadline is midnight of Friday, January 4, 2013.
