The centerpiece of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, Spoonbridge and Cherry was commissioned especially for the site from the artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.

Coosje van Bruggen:
"And scale is one of the most difficult things to determine. Scale is the proportion of the object in comparison to other things in the surroundings-buildings, the highway, anything. All of that you have to take into account when you do a public sculpture."
