This bronze bust of Pope Clement X (Emilio Altieri, 1590-1676) is believed to be a collaboration between Gianlorenzo Bernini—famous sculptor, architect, painter, and poet—and Giovanni Battista Gaulli. Gaulli, who painted Diana the Huntress, shown to the left, was a friend and close associate of Bernini, and both men executed commissions for a succession of popes and their families. An Italian scholar who recently attributed the bust to Bernini proposed this scenario: because Bernini was briefly banned from the Pope’s presence due to a family scandal, he modeled his original clay sculpture from a painting of Clement X by Gaulli. He then entrusted Gaulli to oversee the bronze casting. The Altieri family archives record payments to Gaulli for casting a metal bust of Clement X in 1671, and the Italian scholar has identified it as the Institute’s bust.
