About the Artwork French poet-sculptor-collage artist Jean Arp began to make sculpture that sits on a pedestal for the first time in 1930. For Aquatique (which means growing or living in water), he started carving into the block of white marble without knowing what the final result would be, and continued sculpting until he decided he liked the shape. Often he would begin a new artwork using ideas from his earlier projects, and almost always titled his abstract sculptures after they were finished. He based the name on what the shape seemed to suggest. The round belly and the playful split tail of Aquatique might help you imagine a creature floating in the sea.
