About the Artwork The people and places of New York City were among Joseph Stella’s favorite subjects to draw and paint. When he moved there from Italy as a teenager, he was thrilled by this fast-paced city filled with towering skyscrapers and grand monuments. The artist was particularly fascinated with the newly completed Brooklyn Bridge connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn that you see in American Landscape, and he included it in many of his works. At the time, it was the largest structure ever built in America, and the first bridge to be lit by electric lights. To many, including the artist, it became a powerful symbol of the modern world.
