About the Artwork Brazilian artist Jac Leirner reuses huge amounts of throwaway objects, such as shopping bags, letters, and wrappers, to make her sculptures. The busy activity of collecting and organizing so many materials is an important part of her art-making. Blue Phase is a long, flexible loop made of thousands of Brazilian paper bills that she has punched with holes and strung together. Compared to a U.S. dollar, this paper money is not worth very much and it was easy to get, almost like finding and saving pennies. It took the artist two years to collect enough bills to make this sculpture. Many artists make sculptures that sit on shelves or pedestals, but Leirner often places her work directly on the floor. Blue Phase takes us by surprise—it’s coiled like a snake on the stairs between the galleries. Because this sculpture gently winds down the stairway, we notice the space in a new way.
