Physical Description: Idea originated during Beuys's first USA journey. Matchbook advertises The Stanhope [hotel], Fifth Avenue at 81st Street, New York with George Fayer? Feyer? at the piano. The handwritten alteration (in blue ink) on the matchbook from the pianist's last name of Feyer? Fayer? [name is difficult to make out but first letter does not appear to have been a J as Beuys may have believed]" to Jappe refers to the critic Georg Jappe. The piano maker's name, George Steck, appearing in black-and-white photo is a reference to Klaus Staeck, Beuys's publisher. There is handwriting in ink underneath the paper matches. Is it Beuys's signature? Looks different than signature on cardboard for overall work, but Beuys occasionally used a rather ornate, old-fashioned signature, and this could be one of those times. Could be: Joseph Beuys / N.Y. N.Y. / 10.1.1974. Blank white card pasted on reverse of cardboard is 7 x 9-1/2". Directly beneath white card, stamped in ink on cardboard: "edition staeck / 69 heidelberg box 471"
