About the Artwork For the past 50 years, Ellsworth Kelly has been making paintings, sculptures, and prints of very simple shapes. His works are called minimal and abstract because they include only a few colors and geometric forms such as triangles, squares, and parallelograms. The artist likes to show how these basic elements look when they are grouped in pairs or sets. Kelly often chooses yellow, red, and blue — the primary colors used to create all others. The titles he selects, such as Yellow/Red or Red/Yellow/Blue, reveal something specific about each artwork. To make Yellow/Red, Kelly painted two large canvases, then put them together as a single piece. The artwork’s bright, crisp form catches our attention, and its familiar colors and shapes can be found all around us — on a stop sign, at a playground, inside a house, or even in food items like ketchup and mustard. While many people believe that a painting should illustrate its subject matter, Kelly says it is all about materials: paint on a canvas.
