The Ancient Puebloans (Anasazi) made a distinct type of pottery that used black designs on a white background. By alternating fine line hatching and bold black patterns, they created a repetitious design with an optically stunning effect. Inspired by the potsherds of their ancestors, the Haaku (Acoma Pueblo) developed their own style of black-on-white pottery. Earlier Ancient Puebloan-inspired pieces were nearly exact copies, but over time the Haaku integrated these designs into their already wide visual vocabulary. In the process, they developed a unique, black-on-white style that is both clearly inspired by Ancient Puebloan pottery and is also very much their own.
