This punch'ong bowl displays a mode of decoration known as "rope curtain" because the rows of densely stamped circles resemble the thick, twisted rope curtain hung across doorways.

Korean ceramics function as ceremonial, funerary, and evryday household objects.  Many of the oldest examples have been preserved because they were buried in tombs and protected from the elements.
