The following selection of slides introduces students (grades 10-12) to social topics contained in contemporary art.
Teachers can choose one image to discuss per class period. After allowing students to take some time with an image, teachers can then ask students to describe what they see, how it makes them feel, and if and how they can relate to the message that the image conveys.
Through participating in a series of progressively involved discussions about each work, students will be able to build upon their existing knowledge of the formal elements and principles of art in order to enrich their critical thinking skills, and explore and identify ways in which the content and context of the work is relevant to the social issues inherent to their own lives.
