Throughout much of the 18th century, Strasbiurg was the center of the faience (tin-glazed earthenware) industry in France. During the 1740s and 1750s, bright enamel colors, an innovation inspired by porcelain painting, became fashionable in Europe along with ceramic objects shaped like animals, flowers, and vegetables, like this cabbage-shaped tureen.
