The educational department of Musée des beaux-arts de Rennes has produced “Room of Wonders”, a game for the 8 to 12 years old children.

This game reconstructs a curiosity cabinet begun as a collection of exotic objects gathered during the 18th century by President de Robien (1698-1756), a scholar from Rennes. His curiosity cabinet brought together strange objects from the different parts of the world, representing different eras and all the natural kingdoms: animals, plants, minerals, illusionist paintings, and other curious objects.

Drawing on the curious objects from the collections of the French Regional and American Museum Exchange (FRAME) museums, the game presents an intellectual adventure with many interactive activities. The player must find an object that Monsieur de Robien needs to have to complete his collection. Each player must travel around the world to discover this particular object. In the process, the player seeks to create his or her own curiosity cabinet by winning games to retrieve five objects from the museum collections.

The player travels the world by using a globe divided into six areas: North America, South America, Oceania, Africa, Asia and Europe.

A delightful map illustrated by native animals, plants and sounds provides a detailed vision of each territory. A special sound indicates the presence of each curious object.

Each object presents a specific game the player must master: a riddle, a visual or musical puzzle, a guessing game...

When the player wins each game, the object is brought back to the Room of Wonders. There the player can have an access to an interactive Encyclopedia page filled with information about the object (picture, dimensions, location, time period, short text, sound and video).

When five objects have been found, President de Robien reappears to present the final enigma. He offers the player as many clues as needed to succeed. The player can replay the game as many times as he or she wants: the final enigma will be different each time the game is played.

The Room of Wonders permits all the members of the family to become involved in the games and exploration of details about the objects by following more information ... links to the presentation of the objects on the FRAME website and the websites of the US and French museums.

The contributing museums are:

United States: High Museum of Art (Atlanta), Cleveland Museum of Art , Dallas Museum of Art , Denver Art Museum , Los Angeles County Museum of Art , Minneapolis Institute of Arts , Portland Art Museum , Saint Louis Art Museum , Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute (Willamstown).

France: Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, Musée de Grenoble, les Musées de Marseille, Musée Fabre de Montpellier, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, les musées de Strasbourg, Musée des Augustins (Toulouse), Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes.

In the late 19th century, Louis Sullivan conceived the idea of an authentic American architecture suited to the needs of people living in the modern age.

Employing his principles of unified design, Sullivan's followers, including Frank Lloyd Wright, William Gray Purcell, and George Grant Elmslie, developed what is now known as the Prairie School.

Unified Vision explores these modern concepts through the exemplary Prairie School collection at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
