Self-Guided Tour: Animals in Art

Self-guided tours are thematic instructional materials for student groups experiencing the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden on a self-guided visit. All self-guided tours include a Garden map marked with the tour stop locations. Self-guided visits for student groups (10–100 people) can be scheduled using the Tour Request Form ( You can view the materials with the ArtsConnectEd image viewer or download the PDF files to your computer. Use the Prev/Next buttons to move between the page previews and a link to the actual file.

About this Self-Guided Tour

This self-guided tour explores sculptures that include animals as their subject or main idea. Take special notice of the size, shape, and materials from which they are made while discussing ways that animals can be represented in a work of art. Each stop has its own theme, which is indicated.

Pre-Visit Planning

Before you begin this visit, offer a five- to ten-minute introduction that outlines what the students will be doing in the Garden today. Have the students divide into smaller groups of five to ten people and assign a chaperone to each group. Give a copy of the tour to each chaperone, as they will facilitate the activities and questions for each tour stop beginning with “Setting the Scene.”
