About the Artwork

Michelangelo Pistoletto was part of the Arte Povera (“poor art”) movement, a name given to a group of Italian artists during the 1960s and 1970s who used inexpensive, everyday materials in their works. Pistoletto made Three Girls on a Balcony from stainless-steel panels that have been polished to look like mirrors. He painted tissue paper, then cut out the shapes and applied them paint-side-down to the shiny metal. The artist created an illusion with this reflective surface and life-sized figures: gallery visitors and other artworks in the room become a part of his painting. The artwork is like a never-ending performance because it changes every time you step into the picture.
