Huang Yong Ping was born in Xiamen, Fujian province in southwestern China, and studied oil painting at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou. Since 1989, he has been living and working in Paris. Huang has been featured in many of the world’s most prominent venues of contemporary art, including the São Paulo Biennial and the Shanghai Biennale, as well as major museums in Europe, Asia, and the United States. He represented France (with Jean-Pierre Bertrand) at the 1999 Venice Biennale and was a finalist in the biennial Hugo Boss Prize, held at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 1998. Huang is represented in the Walker’s collection and was the subject of its 2005 exhibition House of Oracles: A Huang Yong Ping Retrospective.
