About the Artwork
He likes to describe a sculpture, drawing, or painting using only words or simple diagrams. The object can later be made by a team of assistants who follow the artist’s plan. This principle of conceptual art can be compared to an architect’s blueprint.

LeWitt often uses basic blocks in his artwork, piecing the simple forms together in a variety of combinations. For Three x Four x Three, he created a set of instructions for a large geometric structure of open cubes or stackedup squares. The Walker bought this piece after it was built by workers who followed LeWitt’s directions. They used metal tubing the artist had manufactured to his specified measurements. LeWitt wanted the joints of each section to be visible so the viewer can see how it was made. He is interested in architecture, and this outdoor sculpture both echoes and frames the buildings in the surrounding cityscape.
