About the Artwork

German artist Katharina Fritsch sometimes creates sculptures inspired by toys and children’s stories. She carefully constructs each piece and often models her artworks after animals or ordinary objects. The artist makes her subjects appear different and unusual by changing their size and color. Almost like playthings, this pointy wooden house and rounded mushroom seem to come from a fairy tale. Unlike the one Hansel and Gretel encounter, this sleek witches’ house has no sugary treats or any other markings on the outside. Its shape is simple and plain like the mushroom beside it. Fritsch’s title for this sculpture leads us to wonder who might live inside.
