Jan van Huysum was one of the greatest flower painters of all time. He always painted directly from actual flowers, but through drawings such as this, he created in his imagination arrangements of flowers that bloomed at various times of year. This drawing has been squared to help him copy it-probably to a canvas on which he then painted.
