The socket on the back of this buffalo indicates its use as a support. With its head turned inward, it probably was paired with a mirrored image of itself, the two heavy castings acting to support some type of rack or bracket. The discovery of the clay bells with their animal rack supports suggests how such figural bronzes were probably used.
