Written by Kyokutei Bakin (1767-1848), The Legend of the Eight Dog Warriors is a ninety-eight-volume epic, published between 1814 and 1842. Featuring a number of colorful characters and action-packed episodes, the novel was a huge commercial success and was quickly adapted to the Kabuki stage. This image is from an eight-print series based on a play performed in 1852. Each composition depicts one of the eight warriors. This print represents Inuzaka Keno, played by the actor Bandø Shñka (1813-55). Keno attends a party hosted by his enemy in the guise of a female dancer, as his colorful dress suggests. Kuniyoshi depicts the scene in which the hero is about to kill his enemy, revealing his true identity.
