This web site supports Writing Through Art tours at the Walker Art Center. On a Writing through Art tour, students explore contemporary art and engage in writing activities. Beginning with the works of art, students look carefully, think critically, and interpret what they see. The artwork then becomes an inspiration and prompt for writing essays, stories, and poetry.
The Teaching Strategies section presents writing as a process that begins with thinking and brainstorming ideas and continues through composing, revising, editing, and finally publishing a finished piece. This section also includes a process for teachers to submit student writing to be posted on the site.
There are four general themes or topics for Writing through Art activities section, organized around styles or types of writing:
- Descriptive Writing, including informative writing, process writing (step-by-step directions), and comparative writing
- Critical and Persuasive Writing, including editorial writing, essays, and informal letter writing
- Narrative Writing, including stories, monologues, and dialogues
- Poetic and Expressive Writing, including poems and creative prose
