Evening Glow at Imado, Utagawa Hiroshige ; Sanoya Kihe_
Treden Wagoner on Evening Glow at Imado  November 22, 2010

This image depicts a kiln for clay roof tiles.
There were many pottery kilns around this area until the early part of the last century. In addition to roof tiles, they made all sorts of ceramics including pots, dolls, cups, and inexpensive earthenware for daily use.

In this print, on the far left,  you can see  the rectangular tiles being dried on the stand next to the kiln.

The Japanese Bridge, Claude Monet ; Claude Monet
Treden Wagoner on The Japanese Bridge  November 25, 2009

This painting is great resource for teaching about technique.

Zoom into this image and ask yourself the following questions:

What was the color of the ground (the canvas)?

What color did Monet start with?

What was the last color Monet applied to this image?

How many different colors were on Monet's palette?

Now that you have spent some time thinking about Monet's technique, what other works of art in ArtsConnectEd would be good illustrations of technique? Create your own questions and use zoom to investigate a few of them. Use Comments to share your questions and answers.
