Art Collector Sets

Art Collector Sets are the product of ArtsConnectEd.  They are similar to PowerPoint presentations, except:

  • They contain items you select in ArtsConnectEd, Flickr, YouTube, ArtBabble or any MP3 audio file published on a Web site.
  • Once reviewed by museum staff, they can be published on ArtsConnectEd for other people to use and copy.
  • You can search for Sets and filter them like any other item in ArtsConnectEd and catalogue your favorites.
  • You can find Art Collector Sets other people and institutions have produced, including Sets created by museum staff.
  • You can filter your searches for Art Collector Sets based on grade level, instructional method, keyword and institution.

You must be an ArtsConnectEd registered user to create an Art Collector Set.  If you are not an ArtConnectEd registered user, you can create Temporary Sets, but these will not be saved for later use.  See The Difference Between Art Collector Sets and Temporary Sets for more information.

To become an ArtsConnectEd registered user, see the Registration Help.

An Art Collector Set is a collection of slides.  A slide can contain any ArtsConnectEd item except an Event or an Art Collector Set.  This means you can add any of these items to your Sets:

  • ArtsConnectEd Works of Art
  • ArtsConnectEd Texts
  • ArtsConnectEd Audios/Videos
  • ArtsConnectEd Interactive Resources

You can also customize a Set by adding:

Note:  You cannot add images from other Web sites outside of ArtsConnectEd and Flickr, or video files from Web sites outside of YouTube and ArtBabble.  You cannot add a MP3 audio file that does not have a URL, for example, one from your desktop.  You cannot add other audio file formats, like WAV and AIFF.

With ArtsConnected, you can:

Types of Art Collector Sets

The different types of Art Collector Sets are published Art Collector Sets, private Art Collector Sets, endorsed Art Collector Sets, and featured Art Collector Sets, and Temporary Sets.  Each type is described here.

  • Published Art Collector Sets: Sets that you can search for in the Art Finder.  These Sets are created by registered ArtsConnectEd users, submitted for publication, and accepted for publication (see Figure 1).
Note:  Registered ArtsConnectEd users can copy a published Art Collector Set into their own Art Collections.
  • Private Art Collector Sets: Sets that are not published Art Collector Sets.  These Sets are only visible to the person who created them, and they cannot be copied or presented by other ArtsConnectEd users.  Instead of being located in the Art Finder like published Sets, Private Sets are only located in the Art Collector (see Figure 2).
Note:  A person can share a private Art Collector Set by e-mailing the Set to others.
  • Endorsed Art Collector Sets:  Published Art Collector Sets that museum staff believe are excellent teaching tools.  All endorsed Art Collector Sets have an Endorsed banner across their upper left-hand corner (see Figure 1).
  • Featured Art Collector Sets: Published Art Collector Sets that appear on the ArtsConnectEd homepage:  www.ArtsConnectEd.org (see Figure 3).  These Sets may or may not be endorsed Art Collector Sets.
Note:  You can get to the ArtsConnectEd homepage by clicking the ArtsConnectEd logo (see Figure 4) in the upper left-hand corner of any page in ArtsConnectEd.
  • Temporary Sets:  These Sets are like private Art Collector Sets except they are created by unregistered ArtsConnectEd users, they cannot be saved in ArtsConnectEd, and they cannot be submitted for publication.  Unregistered users are people who have not created an ArtsConnectEd account by registering with ArtsConnectEd.

Note: Registration is free, and you can use all features of ArtsConnectEd for free by registering.  ArtsConnectEd complies with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, and by registering you help the people who created ArtsConnectEd understand how ArtsConnectEd helps students learn and teachers teach.  See Registration Help to learn how to become an ArtsConnectEd registered user.

The Difference Between Art Collector Sets and Temporary Sets

Temporary Sets are the same as Art Collector Sets, except:

  • Temporary Sets are created by unregistered users, or by registered users who have not signed into ArtsConnectEd before creating the Set.
  • ArtsConnectEd deletes Temporary Sets when you close the Web browser.  Art Collector Sets are saved in the database until the user who created them deletes them.
  • Temporary Sets cannot be submitted for publication.

When possible, create Art Collector Sets instead of Temporary Sets.  In order to create an Art Collector Set, you must be an ArtsConnectEd registered user.  To become an ArtsConnectEd registered user, see Registration Help.

Search Published Art Collector Sets

When an ArtsConnectEd user creates an Art Collector Set and submits it for publication, and if the Set is approved, a copy of the Art Collector Set is published on the public side of ArtsConnectEd.  When the Set is published, it is placed in the Art Finder section of ArtsConnectEd, and becomes visible to all other people using ArtsConnectEd.

As an ArtsConnectEd user, you can present and copy published Art Collector Sets.  In order to use other user’s published Art Collector Set, you first need to find the Set.

To find a published Art Collector Set in ArtsConnectEd:

  1. Click the blue ART FINDER button at the top right of the ArtsConnectEd homepage.
  2. Click the Art Collector Sets tab on the filter (see Figure 1).  ArtsConnectEd shows all published Art Collector Sets in ArtsConnectEd.
  3. (Optional step) Make your search more specific by specifying a Keyword, selecting the Grade level the Set should appeal to, or by selecting the Instructional Method in the filter.  See Filters in ArtsConnectEd for more help.
Note:  Checking the Endorsed by ArtsConnectEd checkbox in the filter will limit your results to only show those Art Collector Sets recognized by museum staff as exceptional teaching tools.
  4. Click the Go button if one appears beside the last textbox you type in.
  5. ArtsConnected updates its results to show those Sets that match your search criteria you selected in the filter.
Note: To reset the filter to its original setting, click the Reset All button.
  6. Click the Set’s hyperlinked title or representational image.  The Set’s detail page opens.
  7. Using the ITEM ACTIONS box (see Figure 2) in the upper right-hand corner of the Set’s detail page you can present the published Set, e-mail the Set, or print the Set.

Add Your Previous Art Collector Sets to the New ArtsConnectEd

If you created Art Collector Sets using the previous version of ArtsConnectEd, you can add those Art Collector Sets to this version of ArtsConnectEd.  When you add one of your previous Art Collector Sets to this version of ArtsConnectEd, you import it.

You must register to use this version of ArtsConnectEd before you can import your Art Collector Sets from the previous version of ArtsConnectEd.  You do not need to register using the same username and password you used in the previous version of ArtsConnectEd, but you may if you want to.

Note: To register to use this version of ArtsConnectEd, please see Registration Help.
To import an Art Collector Set:

  1. Log into this version of ArtsConnectEd:
    • Click the SIGN IN button in the top left-hand corner of the Web page.
    • Enter the Username and Password you created when you registered.
    • Click the SIGN IN button again.
  2. Click the ART COLLECTOR button at the top left of the screen.  ArtsConnectEd shows the Art Collector Sets you have created using this version of ArtsConnectEd.
Note: This area will be empty if you just registered (see Figure 1).
  3. Click the Import From Old ArtsConnectEd button (see Figure 1).  The Import Set page opens.
  4. Enter the username and password you used in the previous version of ArtsConnectEd and click the SHOW OLD SETS button.  ArtsConnectEd opens the Choose Sets to Import page (see Figure 2).
  5. Check the checkboxes beside all the Sets you want to import into the new version of ArtsConnected.
Note:  If you select many Sets, ArtsConnectEd may take several miunutes to import them.
  6. Click the IMPORT SETS button at the bottom of the Choose Sets to Import page.  ArtsConnectEd imports your Art Collector Sets into the new version (see Figure 3). You may now do anything to these Sets as those which you create in the new version of ArtsConnectEd.

Note:  If the Set you import does not have its Representative Image available in the new version of ArtsConnectEd, the Set will look like the center Set in Figure 3.  This item’s image is not available in the new version of ArtsConnectEd yet.  The item’s image will reappear in the future after the ArtsConnectEd administrators import it.

Using Art Collector Sets as Quizzes

Many educators deliver the same (or a similar) quiz/test to multiple classes. In the past, students from one class have helped their friends cheat on the quiz by copying the Web address of the Art Collector Set when they took the quiz.  They could then give the Web address of the quiz to their friends, who could use it to study beforehand.

Using these instructions, you will create a unique Set for each class. With a separate Set for each class, students from one session cannot share the Web address of the quiz with students from another session.

You must be an ArtsConnectEd registered user to create an Art Collector Set.  To become an ArtsConnectEd registered user, see Registration Help.

To create a unique Quiz Set:

  1. If you are not logged into ArtsConnectEd, log in now:
    • Click the SIGN IN button in the top left-hand corner of the Web page.
    • Enter the Username and Password you created when you registered.
    • Click the SIGN IN button again.
  2. Create your set.  See Create an Art Collector Set for more information on how to build your Set.
  3. Once you have created your Set, click the ART COLLECTOR button at the top of the screen.  ArtsConnectEd shows all your Sets.
  4. Open the Set you want to use as a quiz by clicking on its representational image or its title.  The Set’s Detail page opens.
  5. Title this Set.  Include the word MASTER in your title. (This is a suggestion, you can name it whatever you like but this might help identify your original).
  6. Locate the SET ACTIONS box in the upper right-hand corner of the Edit Set Detail page (see Figure 1).
  7. Click the Duplicate link in the left-hand column of the SET ACTIONS box (see  Figure 1).
  8. A confirmation message opens.  Click the OK button.  ArtsConnectEd copies your quiz Set and opens the Edit Set Details page of the copied Set.
  9. Rename the copied Set so that its title includes the name or number of the class section.
  10. Click the SAVE SET button at the bottom of the screen.
  11. Repeat steps 7 through 10 until you have created a duplicate of the Set for each class section.
Note: Each duplicate will have a different URL or Web address.
  12. To capture the URL/Web address of each Set either:
  13. Repeat steps 12 until you have the links for all classes’ quizzes.

Important:  As each class section ends delete that section's Set. See Delete an Art Collector Set. This ensures that students in earlier classes cannot share valid Web addresses with students in later classes.
Do not delete you MASTER Set, as its URL has not been used for a quiz, and you may want to reuse this Set to create future tests.
