Add an External Image, from Flickr, to an Art Collector Set

You can add images to slides in Art Collector Sets from two sources: ArtsConnectEd and www.Flickr.com.  Other image sites are not supported for two reasons:

  • To protect artist’s rights by preventing copyright infringement.
  • ArtsConnectEd’s interface, software that allows different computer programs to interact, only supports adding images from Flickr.

You must be an ArtsConnectEd registered user to add an image from Flickr to an Art Collector Set.   To become an ArtsConnectEd registered user, see Registration Help.

To add an image from Flickr to an Art Collector Set:

  1. Open a Web browser, for example, Firefox or Internet Explorer, and go to www.Flickr.com.
  2. Enter a search word, such as part of a title of a work of art you want to search for, in Flickr search textbox (see Figure 1).
Note: Many of the images in Flickr use a Creative Commons license. You may use Flickr's advanced search to look only for Creative Commons to modify, adapt, or build upon. (see Figure 2) Many of these images are available for non-commercial purposes. Click here for more information on Flickr and Creative Commons.
  3. Click the SEARCH button.  Flickr shows results that match your search word.  Scroll through these results and find the image you want to add to your ArtsConnectEd slide.
  4. When you have found the image you want to add to the slide, click the image in the Flickr results.   Flickr shows the image’s detail page (see Figure 3).
  5. Select the URL text in the address bar of the image’s detail page and copy it by holding down the Ctrl (or Command) keyboard key and pressing the C keyboard key.  In this example, the URL text is:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/spadgy/313250444/.
  6. Open another Web browser window or tab and go to www.ArtsConnectEd.com.
  7. If you are not logged into ArtsConnectEd, log in now:
    • Click the SIGN IN button in the top left-hand corner of the Web page.
    • Enter the Username and Password you created when you registered.
    • Click the SIGN IN button again.
  8. Click the ART COLLECTOR button at the top left of the screen.  ArtsConnectEd shows your Art Collector Sets (see Figure 4).
  9. Click the title, or the image, of the Set to which you want to add the slide with the Flickr image.  The Set’s detail page opens.
  10. Scroll to the bottom of the page.  You will see the slides in the selected Set (see Figure 5).
  11. Click the Add Custom Slide button in the Slides tab header (see pink box in Figure 5).  The Slide Info page opens.
  12. On the Slide Info page, specify:
    • The Slide Title.  When you present this slide with annotation, this will be the header of the slide.  The slide titles in the slides in Figure 3 are Blue Heart and Blue, which are the titles of each work of art.
    • The Display Annotation.  This is the text that appears on the slide when you present it.
    • The My Notes text.  This is text that you see when you present that the audience does not see.  Think of the My Notes text as the cue card for that slide.
  13. Below the My Notes text area, locate the Slide Media header.  In this section is a textbox labeled New Media URL.  Click in this textbox, hold down the Ctrl (or Command) keyboard key, and press the V keyboard key.  The URL text you selected from Flickr address bar will be pasted into the New Media URL textbox (see Figure 6).
  14. Click the Verify Media button.  If the Flickr address is correct, the image you found in Flickr will appear beneath the Slide Media header (see Figure 7).
Note:  If ArtsConnectEd shows a Invalid Flickr URL message instead of a preview of the image, you have specified a bad image address or one that does not exist.  Return to Flickr, copy the Flickr URL text of the image you want to add to the slide, and try pasting the URL text and verifying the image again.
  15. (Optional Step) Click the Select this slide to represent the set checkbox to make this the image shown on the front of this Art Collector Set (representative image).
  16. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the SAVE SLIDE button.  You have now added an image from Flickr to a slide in an Art Collector Set.  To return to your Sets, scroll to the top of the page and click the ART COLLECTOR button in ArtsConnectEd.

Add a Video from YouTube or ArtBabble to an Art Collector Set

You can add videos to slides in Art Collector Sets from three sources: ArtsConnectEd, www.YouTube.com, and www.ArtBabble.org.   Other video sites are not supported for two reasons:

  • To protect artist’s rights by preventing copyright infringement.
  • ArtsConnectEd’s interface, software that allows different computer programs to interact, only supports adding videos from YouTube.

You must be an ArtsConnectEd registered user to add a video from YouTube to an Art Collector Set.   To become an ArtsConnectEd registered user, see Registration Help.

To add an video from YouTube or ArtBabble to an Art Collector Set:

  1. Open a Web browser, for example, FireFox or Internet Explorer, and go to www.YouTube.com or www.artbabble.org.

  5. For videos from YouTube select the URL text in the address bar of the video’s detail page and copy it by holding down the Ctrl ( or Command) keyboard key and pressing the C keyboard key.  In this example, the URL text is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5tKG39G6Qk. Note: The YouTube URL should not include an ampersand "&." If the URL in your browser's address/location bar includes an ampersand use YouTube's "Share" button to copy the correct URL. The "Share" button is located beneath the video on the YouTube page.
  6. For videos from ArtBabble, you will need to use the "embed" URL. To copy this URL, click the Embed link located under the video. Not all ArtBabble videos can be embedded. If you do not see the Embed link you will not be able to use that video in your Art Collector Set. ArtBabble will allow you to select the size of the video you would like to embed, make this choice before selecting the Embed URL. The ArtBabble Embed URL will be very long, make sure you have selected the entire address. Copy the selected URL by holding down the Ctrl ( or Command) keyboard key and pressing the C keyboard key.

Add an MP3 audio file from a Web site to your Art Collector Set

Add an MP3 audio file from a Web site to your Art Collector Set

You can add any MP3 audio file that has been posted online to a slide in an Art Collector Set.  However, you cannot add MP3 files from your own computer unless you post the MP3 file online first.  Also, you cannot add audio files that are in other file formats, such as WAVE audio files.  This is because ArtsConnectEd needs a valid URL, or Web address, to the MP3 audio file in order to add the item to your Set.

This help file shows you how to find MP3 audio files online, and it shows you how to add the audio file to your Art Collector Set.

Note:  You must be an ArtsConnectEd registered user to add an MP3 audio file to an Art Collector Set.   To become an ArtsConnectEd registered user, see Registration Help.

To add an audio file to an Art Collector Set:

  1. Find the URL (Web address) of the MP3 audio file you want to add:
    • Open a Web browser (for example. FireFox, Internet Explorer).
    • Open your favorite search engine (e.g. Google), and search for the audio file you want to add.  For example, enter search words like: Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Speech MP3.
    • You could also go directly to a trusted resource for media such as the Internet Archive, archive.org.
Note: The Internet Archive, a non-profit organization, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form including audio, video, and texts. Like a paper library, they provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public.
    • Once you have found an online MP3 File, in this example the Internet Archive's entry for Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech (see Figure 1a), locate and copy the audio file's URL.
    • Right-click on the audio file hyperlink, and select "Copy Link Location" or "Copy Shortcut" depending on the browser you are using (see Figure 1b).
    • The audio file Address must end with .mp3 in order to be recognized by ArtsConnectEd.  If it doesn’t end in .mp3, the file is not an MP3 audio file. When you mouse over the audio file's hyperlink the entire URL to that file appears in the status bar of your browser (see Figure 1c highlighted in pink).
  2. Open another Web browser and go to www.ArtsConnectEd.com.
  3. If you are not logged into ArtsConnectEd, log in now:
    • Click the SIGN IN button in the top left-hand corner of the Web page.
    • Enter the Username and Password you created when you registered.
    • Click the SIGN IN button again.
  4. Click the ART COLLECTOR button at the top left of the screen.  ArtsConnectEd shows your Art Collector Sets.
  5. Click the title, or the image, of the Set to which you want to add the slide with the MP3 audio file.  The Set’s detail page opens.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the page.  You will see the slides in the selected Set.
  7. Click the Add Custom Slide button in the Slides tab header (see pink box in Figure 2).  The Slide Editor page opens.
  8. On the Slide Editor page, specify:
    • The Slide Title.  When you present this slide, this will be the header of the slide.
    • The Display Annotation.  This is the text that appears on the slide when you present it.
    • The My Notes text.  This is text that you see when you present that the audience does not see.  Think of the My Notes text as the cue card for that slide.
  9. Below the My Notes text area, locate the Slide Media header.  In this section is a textbox labeled New Media URL.  Click in this textbox, hold down the Ctrl or Command keyboard key, and press the V keyboard key.  The URL of the audio file you found in step 1 will be pasted into the New Media URL textbox (see Figure 3).
  10. Click the Verify Media button.  If the MP3 audio file address is correct, an audio player appears below the Slide Media header (see Figure 4).
Note:  If ArtsConnectEd shows an Unknown media URL message instead of an audio player, you have specified an address that does not exist.  Return to step 1 and try again.
  11. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the SAVE SLIDE button.  You have now added an MP3 audio file to a slide in an Art Collector Set.  To return to your Sets, scroll to the top of the page and click the ART COLLECTOR button in ArtsConnectEd.
