Gauguin
Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) had an interesting career as an artist. A Post-Impressionist, he had an infamous friendship with Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), living and painting with him, and possibly even being responsible for cutting off Van Gogh's ear in a drunken duel which Van Gogh may have covered up to protect his friend. Gauguin is perhaps most well known for painting in Tahiti, where he lived off and on at the end of his life, to escape from his society and culture. There is a bit of a self fulfilling mythical quality to Gauguin, and while I appreciate much of his art and influence I am conflicted about some of his actions, attitudes, and pieces.

I find some of Gauguin's art to be powerfully disturbing. He didn't shy from putting his emotions into his pieces and he utilized several mediums such as wood, not just paint on canvas.

Gauguin's use of bright colors when depicting Tahiti is fascinating and really resonates with the theme of escaping to this paradise island he mythologized.

Gauguin fashioned his art in a sort of primitive styling, and he's often described as having fetishized Tahitian culture.

Without disregarding some of the darker aspects of his career and actions in Tahiti, he was capable of creating some very powerful art.

It is difficult to come to terms with exactly what Gauguin was attempting to do with his later pieces. They are obviously influenced by at least perceptions of primitive art but they are still uniquely Gauguin, and often quite intriguing.
