Her Crown, Her Glory?: Black Women's Hair
Hair is political. Perhaps, no other group of women's hair is as political as black women's hair. Whether worn kinky or striaght, curled, cornrowed, braided or chock full of weave, black hair is viewed as both awesome and obscene. Black women constantly navigate a series of mixed messages regarding their hair types and textures. While some celebrate the soft halo of afros, others categorically shun dreadlocks and braids in the workplace. Black women fight a daily love-hate relationship with their hair: to relax or not relax? To go natural or to straighten? And above all, do you allow that stranger who finds your hair "weird" to touch it? This series of images depicts an internal dialogue about black women's hair and seeks to spark a conversation about the beauty and struggles of the affirmation of black hair in American culture.
