Every portrait has a story to tell. In this lesson, students in grades 9-12 will explore the story behind portraits from many times and cultures, then create a self-portrait that tells their own story.
Students:
Use your sketchbook to answer the 20 questions found in this ArtsConnectEd set. Please be sure to read all directions carefully.
After going through the slideshow and answering the questions, you will create your own expressionistic self-portrait that tells a story about you. Your final self-portrait can be realistic, abstract, or symbolic.

History of Portraits
Portraits have been an important part of art for countless centuries. No matter the time or culture in which a portrait was created, the shared human experience makes them relatable.
Every artist tells a story through a portrait. Sometimes the story is told by what is in the portrait, other times the story is found in how the artwork was created.
A Portrait is Worth 1000 Words
Artists have many reasons for creating different types of portraits. Each portrait is unique and tells a story.
Look closely at the following slides. Make your best guesses about what the story behind the portrait. Who are they? Where do they live? What is their life like?
In your sketchbook, write a brief interpretation of each slide (what you think is the story behind the picture).
Use the following questions to help guide your observations:

Your Turn!
After looking at and analyzing many different portraits, now it is your turn to create a portrait of your own!
Your assignment is to create an expressionistic self-portrait. You may choose to make your artwork realistic, abstract, or symbolic.
You may choose to create your self-portrait using any 2-dimensional media (colored pencils, paint, collage, etc.)
Self-Portrait Brainstorm
To help you brainstorm, answer the following questions in your sketchbook:
Question #19: List ten words or draw ten symbols that describe your personality or tell a story about your life.
Question #20: What types of art media and techniques would be best to show the personality traits you listed? Why?
Portrait Tutorial
Portraits can sometimes seem like a difficult thing to learn how to do. If you chose to make your self-portrait a realistic one, let's make it easier by practicing the individual features of the face first before drawing a whole face.
First, I want you to look at what NOT to do. The following webpage has some good examples of common mistakes when drawing a portrait. Please take some time to read through it!

2. nose
3. eye

Be sure to complete three planning sketches before beginning your final work.
