Teacher Outline:
Every portrait has a story to tell. In this lesson, students in grades 9-12 will explore the story behind portraits from many times and cultures, then create a self-portrait that tells their own story.
Students:
Use your sketchbook to answer the 20 questions found in this ArtsConnectEd set. Please be sure to read all directions carefully.
After going through the slideshow and answering the questions, you will create your own expressionistic self-portrait that tells a story about you. Your final self-portrait can be realistic, abstract, or symbolic.
Portraits have been an important part of art for countless centuries. No matter the time or culture in which a portrait was created, the shared human experience makes them relatable.
Every artist tells a story through a portrait. Sometimes the story is told by what is in the portrait, other times the story is found in how the artwork was created.

Artists have many reasons for creating different types of portraits. Each portrait is unique and tells a story.
Look closely at the following slides. Make your best guesses about what the story behind the portrait. Who are they? Where do they live? What is their life like?
In your sketchbook, write a brief interpretation of each slide (what you think is the story behind the picture).

Portraits can sometimes seem like a difficult thing to learn how to do. If you chose to make your self-portrait a realistic one, let's make it easier by practicing the individual features of the face first before drawing a whole face.
