Under Cover: Art Today and Tomorrow
This Set introduces middle and high school students to contemporary art by focusing on the elements of appropriation and time. Posters, signage, newspapers, magazine pictures, words, and ads have been sampled by a number of artists. In this Set you'll find examples of artworks that borrow from these source materials and exhibit them in new ways.
This Set is complemented by an art activity written in a PDF format. You will find it attached to the last slide at the end of this presentation.
You can find out more about each work by clicking on the "More Info" button in the Present mode.

In this work, Thomas Hirschhorn appropriated pictures from glossy magazines.
Describe one of the magazine pictures, and speculate where the photo was taken and the name of the magazine that might have printed it.
Do you cut out pictures from magazines? What kinds of pictures interest you?

The artist Mark Bradford collected end papers found in a hair salon and sections of billboard posters for this work.
What do you notice about the way these materials are arranged?
What do the large white shapes resemble?
Why do you think the artist included them?

How Deep is the Ocean?
Udomsak Krisanamis is from Thailand and learned English when he came to the United States. One resource he used was the newspaper. Once he had understood a new word, he crossed it out in the newspaper.
For this work, strips of newspaper were glued to a bed sheet and painted with ink.
Imagine the words underneath the colored inks.
How long does it take to learn a language?

Art Today and Tomorrow: Teaching with Contemporary Art
Over the 2009 and 2010 school years the Walker Art Center worked with teachers and students from Minneapolis Public Schools to develop model lessons for teaching with contemporary art for middle and high school students using works from the Walker's collections. This Set and others identified "Art Today and Tomorrow: are the result of a partnership and collaboration.
Art Today and Tomorrow is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Walker School Programs are supported by the Pentair Foundation and Xcel Energy Foundation.
