ARTS 1229 PTC: Learning to Look Assignment

Pine Technical College ARTS 1229 Intro to Visual Arts Students:

Follow the instructions for this multi-part writing assignment outlined in the following slides. There are a total of 4 writing exercises to be completed by midnight on September 26.

To compose your answers, build your own new ArtCollector set, with images and your written work as outlined in the slides that follow this one.

This assignment is worth 24 points. Criteria for grading can be found in the Writing Assignment Rubric distributed in class and posted on D2L.

Getting Started

Go to http://www.artsconnected.org/
Register as an ArtsConnectEd user.
Use Art Finder to locate the work of art on the postcard you chose on the first day of class.
Read any available information about the work of art in its ArtsConnectEd online record.
Save the image into a new ArtCollector Set. (Click on the yellow plus sign to add the image to a Set.) Title the set "Learning to Look: First Inital Last Name" (i.e. Learning to Look: J Smith).
Go to the Set you have just created by choosing the Set name from the dropdown 'Select a Set and click GO' menu on the upper right of the screen
In the "Description" box under "Edit Set Detail," type: Your First and Last Name, Pine Technical College, ARTS 1229, Fall 2011
Under the Description box, choose "Item with Annotation" from the dropdown menu
Scroll down to the yellow slides tab
Where it says Convert All Slides:, choose "To Item with Annotation" from the dropdown menu (1st choice that appears on the menu)
Duplicate the slide of your postcard image 3 times (so you end up with 4 slides total). You will write one assignment on each slide.

Writing Assignment 1

While viewing the Learning to Look set you've begun, scroll down to the yellow "Slides" tab on the bottom half of the page. Choose the "Edit this Slide" feature for the slide of your postcard image.
Change the Slide Title to Writing Assignment 1
Find the "Display Annotation" area of the slide editor. This is where you will do your writing. Be sure to make use of the spellcheck feature built into the site. Click on the "abc/checkmark symbol" to perform a spellcheck of the text in the box.
DO NOT write in the "My Notes" window, or I will not be able to read your responses when you turn them in.
DO NOT copy and paste directly from MS Word or you will get a formatting error. (If you do your writing in Word, copy and paste into Notepad, then copy and paste into ArtsConnectEd.)
WRITING ASSIGNMENT: Explain why you chose the postcard you did in class. Did the information you read about the object at http://www.artsconnected.org/ make you feel any differently about the image? If so, how/why? Also write three questions you have about the work of art.
Write 150-200 words total.

Writing Assignment 2

On the next/duplicate slide of your postcard image, complete the writing assingment below in the "Display Annotation" portion of the duplicate (new) slide.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT: What do you see? Make a thorough visual inventory of what you see when looking at the image. You do not need to write in complete sentences (single words and phrases are sufficient).
View the image in fullscreen mode and also use the zoom tool to study the image as closely as possible. To get to the fullscreen/zoomable view, click on the red highlighted title for the work of art below the thumbnail image on the right side of the screen.
When you feel you've finished, re-visit the image and ask yourself, "Have I missed anything?" Continue writing until you feel you've noted everything you see.

Revisit the your postcard image again on http://www.artsconnected.org , spending some time studying it closely and considering the questions below.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT: Using your own eyes and minds (not information given on the website or elsewhere), respond to the following questions:

What's going on in this painting/sculpture/image? (this question differs slightly from "What do you see?")
What do I see that makes me say that?
Return to the image and keep asking yoursef these questions and writing until you've explored the image thoroughly. Some of your notes and observations from prior assignments in this series may be useful to review in completing this task. Some repetition or overlap is ok. (You should write AT LEAST 300 words.)

Writing Assignment 4

This portion of the assignment should be completed AFTER we've covered the Visual Elements and Principles in class (scheduled for 9/12 and 9/19).
Change the Slide Title to Writing Assignment 4.
WRITING ASSIGNMENT: Choose two (2) visual elements and one (1) principle of design that the artist uses in your postcard image. (The artist probably uses more than 2 elements and 1 principle. Choose those that are most prominent and/or are of greatest interest to you.)
Writing on the fourth (and final) slide of your postcard image, thoroughly describe WHERE and HOW the artist has used each of the elements and principle you've chosen. (Write one 100-200 word paragraph for each, 3 paragraphs total.) Sum up the assingment with one final (4th) 100-200 word paragraph that describes the EFFECT of the artist's choices on the overall impression/impact the work of art has on you as the viewer.
Refer to short excerpts from Preble's Artforms (posted on D2L), for guidance on writing a formal analysis. You might also find the Artist's Toolkit online resource helpful in understanding and applying the elements and principles of art. This assignment is an abbreviated version of a formal analysis.
