Window Onto the World
This set explores the idea of artists throughout history using painting and other media as a means to offering a window onto the world. Traditional and more contemporary, abstract interpretations of the window onto the world concept are included. Each work in this set uses the subject of landscape as a reference point even if just loosely. The purpose of this set is to get students thinking about image as illusion and a vehicle for expressing one's viewpoint or world/environment.
When looking at the artworks consider whether the natural or industrialized world is represented, or ask whether such a distinction is even important. What mood is produced by each artist's take on landscape? Would you like to inhabit the worlds on view? What's appealing or unappealing about the worlds you see? Can we begin to decipher where the artists are coming from emotionally, geographically, politically, etc. from visual cues within their work?
