| MODIFICATIONS FOR OLDER STUDENTS
The older
student will be able to do more indepth research that can result in a
deeper understanding of the art form of the transformation mask. Richard
Hunt's website at richardhunt.com/news.htm includes an essay by the artist titled
"Art versus Cultural Property". He makes an argument to have the
art of the Native Americans become their cultural property. A discussion
could occur asking, "who owns ideas or a style?".
The creation of a transformation mask can be done using any artistic
style, of course. I would challenge the older student to use stronger
mediums such as found objects; wood pieces; or even corrugated cardboard.
The use of sharp tools for cutting can be handled safely by the older
student and the results are much more impressive than markers on
tagboard.
The book Sculpture in Paper (Nicholas Roukes. Davis
Publications. 1993) has some tremendous techniques and ideas for sculpting
with paper that would be very useful for maskmaking.
