What a leaming experience! 1 started with six ninth grade girls who were excited to do this project, using Ernest Whitman as an example of how artists show different concepts and ideas by using images. We talked about different ways people communicated through art, using the word power as the propelling verb. We decided to try and illustrate the concept of"power" by using another kind of cultural symbol - words. These are the best poems I received.

POWER
by Julie

Power is the feeling everyone has,
But sometimes it makes them spaz.
It can be a good thing to have,
But sometimes you feel like a calve.
Calves can be weak and powerless,
And sometimes we feel like a prize,
And show power shining in our eyes.
To me power is our humor,
But it is also something more.
It is how we express ourselves,
And we store our power on the shelves.
Everyone has some kind of power,
Even if it's making someone clean a shower.

Power
by Katie

Some people possess it
Some crave it
It come in many forms
Expression, tyranny, beauty
All people have it
But not all are aware
To me power means
You are able to express yourself
Without offending or loss of respect
There are various forms of power
Which do you possess?
