I decided to pick Yves Tanguy and asked my five year old student if he or she could think of any dreams from his picture. The picture was named "Through Birds, Through Fire Not Through Glass". I thought it would be very interesting to learn about Tanguy and how dreams inspire him. Most kids do not know how artists get ideas. This project could really open their minds.

My student Danielle, age five, said that the picture "Looks like a pumpkin head". She couldn't think of a dream, but she made up a poem and a joke based on these articles in the picture: apple, ball, toothpick, banana, pumpkin, balloon, furniture and banana peels.

PUMPKIN HEAD SAYS

Pumpkin head says
Got room for the balloon
Food on sticks eat with toothpick
That's my rhyme
Say it anytime

This is her joke:

Question: What are two banana peels in the painting? Answer: Slippers!

We also looked at Kay Sage and her painting "On the Contrary". My five year old student thought it looked like a bad dream.

Student Response: Danielle, age 5.
