Wu Family Reception Hall

China, Chíing dynasty
Twelve-panel folding screen late 17th century
huang hua-li hardwood, ink and colors on silk, brass
The scene on this panel shows people gathering in a family's reception hall for a ceremony to celebrate a boy's coming of age.

Coming of age

You have sneaked in here to steal a look at the screen. It shows a scene like the one that will take place here later in the day--your capping ceremony. You've been looking forward to this day for years. The capping ceremony will tell the world you are no longer a child. You have come of age.

Looking closer you see that in the screen painting, everyone is getting ready for the ceremony. You spot the boy your age in the picture. He is walking towards the reception hall with the chueh, the wine vessel that will be used in the ceremony. His father is already in his place in the reception hall. His mother is coming across the courtyard from her living quarters.
