Time and the Fates Sundial

Master of the silhouette

When Paul Manship made the Time and the Fates Sundial he was a very popular sculptor in the United States. One of the reasons Manship was famous among art lovers was his skill at creating beautiful silhouettes. When Manship made a sculpture, he arranged the forms and details, the shapes and negative space, so that if the sculpture were outlined and filled in with black, like a silhouette or a shadow, you would still see the complete image.
