Time and the Fates Sundial

The leaves in this drawing has changed in the bronze sculpture. The sculpture has smaller branches and clusters of leaves.

Why make a model?

When you need to make something very large, try working out your ideas in smaller sizes first. Drawing is one way to plan a sculpture. See a drawing of the Time and the Fates Sundial. Manship knew from experience that solving problems on a small model is a lot easier than solving problems on a huge scale. A model is also way to show everyone your idea. Manship couldn't have made the 80-foot tall sundial at the fair all by himself. He would need helpers, and helpers would need a model to see how the finished sundial should look. Manship's model sundial is so precise that his helpers could measure it to turn it into a giant reality.
