Did this artist need special training to make this?

Yes. Ed Carpenter has both experience and training in making glass sculpture. But he did not go to art school. Carpenter started to make stained-glass windows as a hobby. He was so interested and dedicated, he wrote to the artists who made his favorite stained-glass designs. These artists invited Carpenter to visit their studios - the spaces where they make their art. Carpenter decided to stay with the artists and study glass design. Stained-glass designs use color, light, and reflections, just like this sculpture.
