Sphere

model for Sphere, 1997

How did this artist know something so big would work?

The artist had to think carefully about the scale of the work-its size in relation to other things around it. This sphere measures 13 feet across, which is pretty big! You may have built models of planes and cars. When artists design large works of art, they make models too. These smaller versions of the work help show artists how the finished art will look. Ed Carpenter made some drawings of the sphere, and then gave them to a model maker, who constructed a model. Carpenter has a lot of experience making large works of art for big buildings.
