Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, plan for the garden expansion, 1991

Watch the garden grow

In 1992, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden expanded to 11 acres. Van Valkenburgh designed the less formal 3.7 acres with curving pathways, open spaces surrounded by trees, and a 300-foot-long arbor. The Alene Grossman Memorial Arbor and Flower Garden provides colorful shelter in the summer. The expansion also includes a granite sculpture plaza for temporary sculpture displays.

When artist Mario Merz walked through the garden, he felt he entered an "unreal" city. So he made the neon sculpture cittá irreale, (Italian words for unreal city) for the top of the conservatory.
