Idea House

Idea House II, kitchen at west end of living room closed off by double doors and wood-slatted roll-down shade of birch, 1947.

Why was Idea House II called "Modern"?

The modern architects and designers used many new ideas in their buildings: lots of glass walls, sleek doors, multi-purpose rooms and furnishings, built-in storage space, and new materials, such as stainless steel. They designed furniture that was light in weight and appearance. The openness of the house with its many windows gave you the feeling that the outside was also inside. This was very different from homes that had small, boxy rooms and small windows.

Idea House II also had new, motorized household appliances. It had an air-conditioner, automatic dishwasher, automatic gas stove, water heater, and an automatic gas clothes dryer. These were new ideas for the 1940s.
