The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Atelier van Lieshout
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly 1998
mixed-media installation

What about the wooden house?

How old is this house? When van Lieshout came to Minnesota, he visited Laura Ingalls Wilder's simple cabin on the Minnesota prairie. Wilder grew up there about 100 years ago. She wrote a book called Little House in the Big Woods. Have you ever read it? The television show Little House on the Prairie was based on it. The cabin reminded van Lieshout of old Dutch farmhouses. Click here to view a video or read the text of van Lieshout talk about the wooden house (video requires Quicktime). So he built a house that looked a little like a Dutch farmhouse and a little like a prairie cabin.

The wooden house has furniture, a front room for eating, sleeping, and visiting, and an attic for secret, playful activities.
