The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

What is Atelier van Lieshout?

Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout opened a design studio in Rotterdam, Holland, in the early 1980s. When other designers, architects, and furniture-makers began to work with him, they became know as his studio, or "atelier" (the French word for "studio"). All the workers have their own specific tasks, but any can give ideas on what to build.

At first, the Atelier made mostly practical, simple and functional furniture. In recent years it has produced new and surprising projects, some with mobile parts. Is this art? Van Lieshout wants us to: Imagine. Be curious. Pretend. Have fun. He says, "I couldn't care less what people call it, as long as I can make what I want."
