Gates

Group of Deer 1941
bronze

These free-standing sculptures are in the galleries at the Minnesota Museum of American Art in St. Paul, but Manship used these images in different projects too. They are just like the smaller sculptures on the Osborn gates. Notice how the bears form a stable triangle, and are made of big rounded forms. They look heavy, dignified, and friendly. The deer, however, look delicate and graceful. Arched necks and lots of spaces between them help them appear pretty and energetic. Manship rearranged these animal forms for another set of gates for a zoo. See if you can spot them.
