Purcell-Cutts House

William Gray Purcell and George Grant Elmslie
Purcell-Cutts House, Minneapolis, Minnesota 1913

How was this house different?

"Houses should not be clamps forcing us to do the same things three hundred and sixty-five days in the year," Purcell wrote. He wanted a house where you could do different things depending on the weather or your mood. Perhaps the family would eat a cozy meal by the fireplace on wintry evenings. They might swing open the dining room doors for a summertime meal with a view of the lake. They could enjoy a wide-open bedroom upstairs, or set up a screen for some privacy. Their indoor lives could change as the environment outside changed. But how to make the outdoors a part of life indoors?
