Three-dimensional mini design portfolio

Create a mini design portfolio by following these steps to design a playground structure for kids to climb on that is fun, safe and beautiful.

You will need:
plaster
wire
paper
cardboard
wax
clay
toothpicks
any other materials to build with

paste
scissors
sketchbook
pencil
eraser
ruler
art books and magazines for ideas

1. Look at Spoonbridge and Cherry, Time and the Fates Sundial, and Sphere to learn about how other artists develop their ideas with models.

2. Explore several ideas for your playground structure design by creating a three-dimensional sketchbook. Use wire, paraffin wax, cardboard, toothpicks, paper and other materials to make objects that have three dimensions: height, width, and depth. Write down your ideas and inspirations in a traditional flat sketchbook that will go with your portfolio.

3. Choose your best three-dimensional sketch to make into a finished piece. Begin by drawing your complete design, indicating details such as scale.

4. Include notes about the site for your design, and any information about your subject matter or materials. Find examples of similar work by other artists. Explore and think about your idea.

5. Create a scale model of your design, using permanent materials. For example, if your sketch was done with wax, use plaster or clay for your model. If your sketch was constructed of paper, use heavy cardboard. Paint or decorate your model.

6. Describe in writing the process you followed, from idea to finished piece. How different is your finished piece from the original sketch? What made these changes necessary? What surprised you most about the way your design changed as you worked on it? Use a checklist to make certain your portfolio is complete.
