REMEMBERING LIKE JUDY: STUDYING THE WORK OF JUDY ONOFRIO

USING OUR OWN MEMORYWARE

RHONDA SMEDSTAD'S REFLECTION
Armatures are coming together well. Some students are taking tooooo long building and rebuilding, even though their plans seemed pretty well defined. I’ve asked them to join others who are ready to “jewel” in order to keep everyone on somewhat of a timetable.

Thin layer of adhesive grout/caulk adhere “jewels” in smallish areas before applying the next patch of grout. Lay it on deep enough to embed the jewels.

IMPORTANT! Bring at least twice as many “jewels” as you think you’ll need; be color-aware!

Class time can seem chaotic, although students were very much on-task. We did have a problem with a nail gouge on a table top; Insist on thick pads of newspaper on the floor for any tool use.

Results have been less spectacular than I have expected, but the students enjoyed this project immensely. One girl told me that she especially enjoyed the sculpture experience as she is not allowed to use even clay at home--too messy!
