REMEMBERING LIKE JUDY: STUDYING THE WORK OF JUDY ONOFRIO

USING OUR OWN MEMORYWARE

RHONDA SMEDSTAD'S REFLECTION
Questions for Judy:
Judy Onofrio leads teachers in the project on a tour of her garden.

1. Do you start with an idea and gather appropriate materials or do the
materials inspire your ideas?

2. What were you like as a child?

3. Do you think an insider can become an outsider?

Thoughts:
I have shared Judy Onofrio’s art and our experience from Friday with friends and family through internet images and the photos I took that day. Everyone reacts with delight; everyone relates in some way. No one glances quickly, everyone wants to study the whole as well as the components for the items themselves, the color, texture, and the overall effect. Judy’s sculptures, in their own unique ways, draw people in. They are not “ignorable”; they demand a reaction. They, in this way, are universal.
