REMEMBERING LIKE JUDY: STUDYING THE WORK OF JUDY ONOFRIO

USING OUR OWN MEMORYWARE

JUDY CHRISTOFFERSEN'S REFLECTION
I do not think we should put so much emphasis on memoryware because of the difficulty of getting kids to bring enough stuff for their piece and the problem of kids not bringing anything. I think the emphasis has to be more on the subject of their piece and less on what covers it. I have done this—with the 2000 I teach—and found that getting enough stuff to cover just the chair for each elementary school was a job.

Say you created individual pieces out of clay. You did a relief of your favorite memory (Judy-big fish) and then you decorated, or filled in with mosaic pieces. You could use colored aquarium gravel, seeds and dried beans or the Stone By Stone pieces available on the market. This takes the pressure off the kid who lives in a shelter to bring materials.
