REMEMBERING LIKE JUDY: STUDYING THE WORK OF JUDY ONOFRIO

USING OUR OWN MEMORYWARE

CARL ANDERSON'S REFLECTIONS

The armature is complete. Tomorrow we start phase 2, applying stucco and assemble.

Today we put the sculpture in place. To stabilize it we tied ropes to the top and sides of the sculpture and tied them to stakes in the ground. This is only temporary until we pour the base.

Today we poured the base. It was a little difficult setting the concrete into the form because there was not much room around the bottom of the sculpture. It took us about an hour and a half to mix the concrete and pour it. It also took much more crete than I thought it would.

Today we started applying stucco and found objects. We found we had to had to lower the portion of water used because Judy's recipe made it too runny. I am also nervous about whether or not the found objects will stick.

We had a lot of trouble getting the stucco to adhere to the bottom of the globe. I will have to figure out a better way of applying the stucco to the outer circle.

We used plastic bags and duct tape to apply stucco to the outer wheel. This seems to be the best available solution to getting stucco on all sides of the rebar.

We found we had to use liquid nails to apply our found objects. The stucco did not have enough adhesive qualities. We also had a few setvbacks. First, we had two weeks that were short due to MEA break and PT conferences. We also had a short spell of bad weather. Both the students and I are getting anxious to finish this project.

I found my solution to the stucco consistency probelm was to mix the stucco an hour before the students work with it. This meant coming in early, but the results were worth it.

We are getting far enough along with our project that we should be done by week's end. No matter where we are in our progress, I am putting a halt to the project on Friday. We have other lessons I need to teach.

Our mold did not work on the front of the base. If we do this again, I will have to use finer concrete mixture when using a press mold.
